Staithes firm has gained a top award in a best local food producer competition organised by Yorkshire Life magazine.
Matthew Asquith (43) and his partner Vicky Dixon (30) run Whitby Seafish Ltd on Staithes Industrial Estate which processes wet fish. The business has been in Staithes for more than 20 years but Mr Asquith took it over in 2003 and last year added a smokehouse to it.
The couple were presented with a plaque to mark their success in the local food producer contest by BBC Look North newsreader Harry Gration at a gala dinner in Leeds.
A delighted Mr Asquith said later: “I think it’s absolutely fantastic for a small Whitby company to win a competition like this.”Ms Dixon said: “We didn’t know we were being judged - they sent a secret buyer to us.“As far as possible we use local fish and employ 12 people in the business.”The category they entered in the competition was sponsored by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society.
They were short listed with two other local food producers, one producing fruit and herb vinegar and the other goats’ cheese, but beat them both to top place in the finals.
